Happy Valentine’s Day

Origins of Valentine’s Day and the Evolution of Card and Gift Giving

Valentine’s Day, observed annually on February 14th, has a fascinating history tangled with pagan rituals, Roman festivals, and Christian traditions mixed with a beheading of a saint. So how on earth did such a beautiful holiday come out from such a dark and interesting past?

The Dark Truth About Valentine’s Day

In the 3rd century in Rome, St. Valentine, a priest known for his nonconformist stance, found himself in defiance of Emperor Claudius II’s decree prohibiting young men from marrying, because the emperor believed unmarried men made more effective soldiers. Despite emperor’s orders, Valentine secretly continued to conduct Christian marriage ceremonies for young couples.

Valentine was eventually apprehended and imprisoned. During his incarceration, a miraculous event happened – Valentine reportedly healed the blind daughter of his jailer.  On the eve of his execution, Valentine writes a beautiful note for the healed girl, concluding it with the now-familiar phrase “From your Valentine.” This significant moment, occurring just before his beheading on February 14th, marks one of the earliest recorded Valentine’s greetings.

Now, the twist in this tale is that Valentine ends up being a martyr for Christian marriage and love and was eventually ordained a Saint by the Church. February 14th therefore became the prestigious title of Saint Valentine’s Day.  So, who would’ve thought that a priest’s rebellious deeds could evolve into a globally celebrated day of love?

Now, here is another theory of the beginnings of Valentine’s Day, which links this day to the Lupercalia festival, an ancient Roman pagan fertility ritual that takes place from February 13-15.

The Lupercalia festival starts at the Lupercal cave, dedicated to the fertility god Faunus. This event involved the ritual sacrifice of goats and dogs. The Lupercalia priests, clad in goatskins, would run through the streets, lightly striking women and fields with blood-dipped whips to signify fertility and purification. The people and women loved this festival and welcomed this ritual whipping.  Despite the festival’s reputation for wild and debaucherous activities, including casual pairings for sexual exploration, Lupercalia held a sacred significance for Romans, symbolizing fertility and agricultural abundance.

How Did Valentine’s Day Card and Gift Giving Come About?

The association of Valentine’s Day with card and gift giving emerged in the 18th century England. Handwritten love notes, known as “valentines,” gained popularity, leading to mass-produced Valentine’s Day cards in the 19th century. These advancements, coupled with printing technology, made expressing love more accessible to a wider audience.  Over time, the tradition expanded beyond cards to include gifts like chocolates, flowers, and jewelry. Today, Valentine’s Day has become a commercialized holiday generating billions of dollars revenue globally.

In conclusion, Valentine’s Day’s history, is rooted in both dark origins of the Christian and ancient Roman traditions and the Lupercalia Festival. The evolution of card and gift giving emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries, transforming into the widely celebrated occasion we know today.
